The Heart Issue

“Yes, a person is a fool to store up earthly wealth but not have a rich relationship with God.”

Luke 12:21

Often time people will listen to sermons and listen to Bible stories and hear the message that you can’t be wealthy to be a Christian.  It is easy to do with all the references of “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth” (Matthew 5:5) and here in this parable Jesus is telling this man that he was a fool for storing up his things.

A member of my small group said that really this is a heart issue. If you come to a place where you are only worried about yourself and have no concern for those around you, then you become a fool. Later in this gospel, Jesus says, “Where your treasure is there your heart will be also.” (Luke 12:34).  We already know that “(Christ) abides within us.” (1John 3:24b) Christ is not concerned with how much we have or how much we spend.  He is concerned with what our heart is feeling while doing it.  Does the heart that he abides in think first of the needy and homeless?  Does our heart first think of what the needs of our church are before we make a time commitment to an outside project?

See, when we accepted the fact that Jesus died for our sins, we accepted Him to dwell inside us.  We asked him to shape our actions around His idea for our lives.  We need to spend some quiet time to listen and feel for Jesus’ presence in us.  Listen for the quiet voice that helps us, calms us, and makes the world okay again.  He is there and He wants you to listen more.  Perhaps we need to look at our hearts and see if there is something from keeping it from feeling as Christ would have it feel.  Do we have a heart issue?

The Discomfort Zone

I am part of a wonderful blog chain that was started out of an equally wonderful group ChristianWriters.com.  I am glad to be a part of it.  Unfortunately, I had to take down my old blog and have just now gotten things up and going on this new blog.  I still don’t have everything set and it is still very much in the early stages.  However, I didn’t want to disappoint.

I am not close to being a published writer unlike some of my fellow bloggers on this chain, I have had digital publications pick a thing or two up. Still, writing is something I love deeply but has not always been a focus of mine.  It was more of something I felt I had to keep hidden because corporate America or at one time mentors, who thought it would not pay the bills.  So, when I think of what my discomfort zone is when writing, it would be writing itself.

I am a trained and experienced Corporate Accountant.  The ones everyone blames for the downfall of the economy.  However, the companies I worked for never had enough money to matter to the economy at large. Where I come from, professionally speaking, you do not express your ideas where others can readily see them.  You are to express the companies beliefs and attitudes at all times.  You are to be a “company man”.  You can see where it would be uncomfortable to start writing a blog.

Once I began to listen to the purpose and the call God had for my life, I started letting go of what others would have for me.  I began to be more comfortable in expressing my ideas.  God allowed me to leave the Discomfort Zone and enter into a zone of what can only be described as peace.  While at times I do not feel as worthy as some at the craft of writing, I know that where it comes from is a calling, something I cannot hold onto anymore.  I still live in the Discomfort Zone much of the time when I am writing but God willing I will make it through. The way I see it, what I have to say might not be for you but since it was given to me from my Father, it is for someone.

God Bless
